With over 150 identified species, plecos are a popular choice among Australian aquarists. Native to the rivers of the Amazon jungle in South America, these catfish thrive in both fast-moving and slower waters. Most plecos are nocturnal and prefer to feed at night, making them quite shy during the day. Driftwood is an excellent addition to their tank, as it provides a substrate for algae and biofilm, essential food sources for plecos. However, their diet extends beyond this; they also enjoy sinking pellets and vegetables, like zucchini! Plecos also love to hide, so providing terracotta caves or creating hiding spots in their environment will make them feel more secure.
