Corydoras, commonly known as Corys, are small, peaceful freshwater catfish native to the rivers and streams of South America. They are beloved in the aquarium hobby for their gentle nature, hardy constitution, and social behaviour, making them an excellent choice for community tanks. Corys are bottom dwellers, spending most of their time foraging along the substrate for food. Their downturned mouths and barbels help them sift through the sand or gravel in search of uneaten food and other edible bits, contributing to a clean and healthy tank environment. They are typically kept in groups, as they are highly social and thrive in the company of their own kind. An interesting fact about Corydoras is their ability to breathe air. Like Bettas, Corys possess a specialised adaptation called the labyrinth organ, which allows them to gulp air from the surface in low-oxygen conditions. This unique feature not only enhances their survival in the wild but also makes them particularly resilient in a variety of aquarium settings.
