Kronoheros umbriferus, commonly known as the Umbee Cichlid, is a large and powerful freshwater fish native to rivers and lakes in Central America, particularly in Colombia and Panama. This impressive cichlid can grow up to 80 cm in length, making it one of the largest cichlids in the aquarium hobby. The Umbee Cichlid is known for its striking colouration, with males displaying vibrant blue, green, and turquoise hues, often with iridescent scales that shimmer under the light. Females are typically more subdued in color but still possess a unique beauty. It is best kept in a species-specific tank or with other large, robust fish. They require a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and strong filtration to accommodate their size and activity level. Despite their challenging nature, Umbee Cichlids are highly sought after by experienced aquarists for their impressive size, vivid colours, and dynamic personality.
